International Freight Forwarding

International freight forwarding companies are in charge of moving packages, shipments and other merchandise. It is also the task of these companies to ascertain the carriers are well coordinated.

How the Process Works

What these companies do is ship together goods that are headed to the same direction. They work with various carriers to make sure the products get to their destination safely.

This is much more effective than the old system wherein you’d contact a shipper and have them pick the item up. Aside from working with carriers, there are other matters the company must deal with.

Coordinating the Carriers

Here is an example of how these companies operate. The product is picked up by a truck from the company. A local forwarding company may make do with a single carrier, but an international one will require switching to other carriers.

From the truck the package will be transferred to a plane or ship and back again to a truck. It is the company’s responsibility to make sure the carriers pick the items on time.

In addition, the company must look for the cheapest and fastest group of carriers. This will be dictated by the shipper and the forwarder must adhere to it.

These international freight forwarding companies are equipped with computerized tracking systems. This allows their clients to monitor their shipment’s progress. Monitoring can be done at the company’s websites.

Requirements for International Shipping

These companies need valid and legal licenses to work. Like other businesses, accounting and technical requirements have to be met. Local forwarders will need carrier licenses to operate interstate. International companies need licenses for importing and exporting.

They will need a separate license for each country they plan to operate in. These forwarders must also verify the licenses of the carriers. The verification is done on a per assignment basis.

Want are Logistics?

Logistics are used by these companies to monitor every shipment. Their logistics setup is used to confirm any changes regarding the carrier. Logistics also involves proper packaging.

The right containers must be ordered. These are subsequently shipped to where carriers need them. Making follow ups on goods movements are done using logistics.

International shipments will also need customs specialists. They will oversee and manage the requirements involved in international shipping. These forwarders usually have a legal staff. They are often necessary because rules concerning international shipping can vary per country.

Billing

The forwarder will also gather all the bills from the supplier and carrier. After the customer is billed, the payments are given to the carriers involved in the shipment.

Job Qualifications

To become a freight forwarder, one should enroll in the various schools that teach the basics of freight shipping. You must also learn how to communicate with people at customs. This is very critical if you’re going to work in an international forwarding company.

The importance of international freight forwarding companies cannot be underestimated. All over the world, trucks, planes and ships move products in and out of countries. None of this would be possible without these forwarders.
