Freight Forwarding Companies
The role of freight forwarding companies is to deliver merchandise and goods. This means they manage the way the product is shipped. Sometimes these companies are called brokers, but they should really be called freight forwarders.
How the Companies Work
These companies started out as direct shippers, but they also function like brokers. A client’s pallets are loaded from the warehouse by the forwarding company’s truck.
Before the shipment can reach its final destination, it often has to use different carriers. From the truck it may go to a ship. Or from the truck it may go to a ship or a plane and back to the truck. This involves a lot of planning, logistics and coordination.
It is the task of the freight forwarder to monitor the shipment. It is also up to the freight forwarder to prepare the carriers. The shipping will have to be in accordance with the request of the shipper.
Most of these forwarders possess an electronic supporting system.
This helps customers keep track of their shipment anytime they want.
Licensing
All these freight forwarding companies must have licenses to operate. They must also comply with the legal and accounting requirements set by the country or state.
In addition, the companies must be licensed in the states they intend to deliver to. International forwarders must possess the licenses for importing and exporting to that country. The forwarder must ascertain the carrier they use has a legitimate license (i.e., for aviation, maritime, etc).
Logistics
Logistics is the system used to supervise every shipment. Logistics has many components. For example, it is used to confirm a change in carriers. Logistics is also used to check up on deliveries as their movement commences.
The logistics must also ensure the packaging is correct. The shipment containers must also be set in places that the carriers will be able to find easily.
Customs Specialists
Many freight forwarders hire customs specialists to oversee international shipments. These individuals are also used for export and import declarations.
There are also forwarders who have the power of attorney for customers. These forwarders have their own legal team to meet the requirements of international and interstate shipping.
Bill Collectors
The company will also gather all the bills of the supplier and carrier. The customer is then billed and payments are made to all the carriers involved.
How to Become a Freight Forwarder
The requirements will differ per company, but knowledge of computers will be essential. Knowledge about the transport sector will also aid job applicants. Many truck companies have courses for new applicants.
Among the things you will learn are the processes involving freight and how to handle the paperwork. You will also learn how to interact with customs people. Anyone who wants to work as a freight forwarder needs to apply at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and get their license.
As you can see, freight forwarding companies perform a very important role in business and trade. They are the ones who move all the goods to different nations, day and night.
