Cargo Logistics
If you are going to establish a freight or shipping company, knowing something about cargo logistics will be necessary. Logistics isn’t just about numbers. It is about how your company is able to put together a system that can carry out the tasks in as efficient a manner as possible.
Cargo Costs and Budget
At the core of the matter is the cost of transporting cargo. The evaluation process will depend on the extent of your company’s service. Is it confined within your country? Or is your shipment service worldwide?
Will you ship goods by land, air or water? Will your company use only a specific mode of transport? When assessing costs, this will be one of the first things to consider.
Apart from the figures above, other factors will influence the total expenditures. This will include transport costs, freight duties and customs accounting. Specifications and requirements for the latter may vary from country to country.
Expenses for transportation will of course include gas and maintenance. Additional costs will include driver salaries, loading and tolls. The costs of the vehicles must be accounted for carefully.
The freight trucks must have to be fuel efficient and reliable. Keep in mind that diesel engines need special equipment. If possible, hire the services of a company that can provide full-time mechanic services.
Buying or Renting Warehouses
Contact a real estate broker. They can tell how much it costs to buy or rent a warehouse. Renting a warehouse can be cheaper. But if you use these warehouses a lot, buy one.
Shipping and Storage
Cargo logistics will inevitably include storage. In most cases, this means keeping the freight in a specific location (i.e., warehouse) during the delivery.
Shipped freight may be moved from one storage facility to another. From there it will be picked up and taken to its final destination. The number of times the freight will be moved will vary depending on the shipment.
Collecting Data
Your cargo company has to collect information about the matters mentioned above. All information about the warehouse and shipment costs must be accounted for. Remember that there are many types of warehouses available. You also have to determine how many are required.
All of these things are part of cargo logistics and analysis. The ultimate goal of your company is two-fold. The first is how to manage these services at the lowest cost possible. The second is how to keep costs low without compromising the service quality.
